The Arbitrariness of the sign in Greek Mathematics
In this paper, we will examine some modes of signification of mathematical entities used in Greek mathematical texts in the light of Saussure’s conceptualization of sign. In particular, we examine certain mathematical texts from Early Greek period, the Euclidean and Neo-Pythagorean traditions, and Diophantus.
